The Fellow of Pediatric Perfusion application window for 2024 is now closed.

Degree

Graduation from an accredited perfusion or circulation technology program approved by AmSECT (CCPs trained on the job must meet all requirements).

Certification

Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, Canadian Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland, or the Australian Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

License

A complete and unrestricted license from the respective state or province (if applicable).

AmSECT Membership

A current member of AmSECT and the ABCP with no reportable actions pending. Membership must be maintained to use the designation. Retiring FPP Members will be awarded FPP Emeritus status upon written request of the FPP approval committee.

Practice

A current practice that establishes the applicant as a specialist in pediatric cardiovascular perfusion with at least the following accumulated pediatric cases:

• 200 cardiopulmonary bypass cases for correction or palliation of congenital heart disease
• At least 80 of which should be on infants ≤ 10 kg
• A maximum of 20% (40) may be as documented backup perfusionist

Interest

Interest in pursuing professional excellence in pediatric perfusion, both as an individual pediatric perfusionist and as a member of the pediatric perfusion community (ex. Membership in local and national perfusion organizations; participation in teaching programs; continuing education through attendance at professional meetings or courses and seminars.

Professional Proficiency

Professional proficiency and ethical fitness are determined by the Fellowship Review Committee.

Participation

Actively maintaining, directing, or supporting the advancement of pediatric perfusion.

Applications for Fellowship are developed and evaluated on a one-year cycle.

After completing the Fellow of Pediatric Perfusion Application form, a formal application will be available for download.

Additional Requirements

Applicants are required to:

• Sign a statement agreeing to abide by the bylaws, rules, and regulations of AmSECT and sign the Fellow Pledge.
• Gather three reference letters from the following current colleagues:
  • One (1) from a current perfusion colleague or Chief Perfusionist
  • One (1) from a pediatric cardiac surgeon
  • One (1) from a cardiac anesthesiologist.
    • NOTE: Letters of reference should be sent directly from the author on institutional letterhead, contain an original signature, and mailed to AmSECT at 330 N Wabash Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60611 or emailed to amsect@amsect.org.

Case Studies

Submit a list of cardiopulmonary bypass cases documenting 200 congenital heart disease corrective or palliative procedures, forty percent (40%) of which shall be in patients less than or equal to 10 kilograms and no more than twenty percent (20%) as the documented backup perfusionist. These cases shall be signature verified by the chief perfusionist of the institution at which the procedures took place. The appropriate form and instructions will be provided. The list serves as an index to the volume, variety, and character of an applicant’s experience.

Cover Letter detailing why the applicant deserves the FPP designation.

Application Fee

A $125 application fee must be paid online or mailed to AmSECT PO Box 776299 Chicago, IL 60677 with FPP in the memo of the check.

Fellow applications are comprehensively reviewed based on the applicant’s perfusion-related judgment and experience, professional competence, ethical conduct, professional standing in the local community, and attitude toward the basic tenets of AmSECT. The Pediatric Fellow Review Committee consists of one member of the Board of Directors, two AmSECT members at large, the current Pediatric Committee Chair, and the Selection Committee Chair.

Preliminary Review

AmSECT National Headquarters reviews each application for completeness and compiles a summary of the biographical and pertinent information for review by the Fellow Review Committee.

Committee Review

The Fellow Review Committee appraises information and recommendations from all sources relating to applications.

Decisions

The Fellow Review Committee will make one of the following decisions:

• Approval – Applicants must receive support from 3 out of 5 Fellow Review Committee members.
• Postponed (for at least one year) – An opportunity for the applicant to acquire further knowledge, additional experience, or develop professionally. It also provides the Society with another period of observation, investigation, and further evaluation of the applicant’s eligibility for Fellow.
• Not Approved– Following a “Not Approved” action, the applicant may submit a new application after a waiting period of three years. Applicants who receive an adverse action on their application may request an appeal. Appeals are heard under the direction of the Executive Board, which may change an adverse action at its discretion.

Note: No Action is taken if an application is incomplete. The application will be considered the following year.

Successful applicants are admitted into Fellowship at the annual Pediatric Perfusion Conference. Applicants are notified by letter of their acceptance for Fellowship and are admitted to Fellowship by the select committee.
