Salary

As per Allied Health Professionals (Tasmanian State Service) Award Level IV Grade I – IV, $97,903 - $104,283 p.a, plus 9.5% superannuation, plus 4 weeks paid annual leave and access to salary packaging.  Salary level will be determined as per applicants experience level and a Market Allowance may be added dependent upon the experience level of the applicant.  Relocation Assistance is also provided.

The role

Perfusionist, permanent full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight. 

The Cardiothoracic Unit is located at the Royal Hobart Hospital and services a population of approximately 500,000 from all regions of the State. At present 350-400 adult open heart procedures are performed annually, including but not limited to, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Valve Surgery and Aortic Surgery. The unit is accredited with the Royal Australasian College of Cardiothoracic Surgeons.

Perfusion Services within the Cardiothoracic Unit provides services to Cardiac Surgery to ICU for ECMO support, to Cardiology for Intra-Aortic Balloon support and to Anaesthesia for Thromboelastograph testing and is actively involved with research projects within the units. The Cardiothoracic Unit is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Collaborative Registry and Perfusion Services are responsible for all data management and auditing of the cardiothoracic unit. Perfusion Services are also involved in on-going research projects within the Cardiothoracic Unit.

We are currently seeking a second full time experienced, motivated Perfusionist to join our team. The role involves independently running cardiopulmonary bypass and related cardiac support equipment for elective and emergency cardiovascular procedures. The ideal candidate would be an experience Perfusionist with good communication skills, a proven team player with a post graduate Diploma or Masters of Perfusion and be certified by the Australasian Board of Perfusion ( or by the American, UK/Ireland or Canadian Boards of Perfusion).  Familiarity with Stockert Heart lung machines is desirable and with Stockert DMS preferable.  Experience with Sorin CellSaver Devices, Arrow Intra Aortic Balloon pumps, Marquet ECMO systems, Medistim Flow Probes, Magellan Platelet Gel and Thromboelastograph machines is also desirable.

Technically whilst we participate in a 1 in 2 call roster, this involves limited number of out of hours cases and an on call allowance is paid and work out of hours is paid at the rate as per the Allied Health Professionals (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) or equivalent. Certified by the Australasian Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or an equivalent body*.

(*occupants of this role who are not Australasian Board Certified will be required to submit their qualifications and experience to the Board on appointment, and ongoing employment may be conditional on the receipt of Australasian Board certification.)
