Position: Cardiovascular Perfusionist

Location: Bethesda, MD


Perform services of a nature and scope described herein the professional standard of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). The services shall include daily interaction with other staff perfusionists, clinicians, residents, fellows, technologists, and nurses, toward the fulfillment of the WRNMMC patient care mission. Shall be responsible for any procedure that falls within the scope of perfusion and provide safe, effective, and appropriate cardiopulmonary bypass assistance in support of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service.

In addition, the following are tasks are required:
o Cardiopulmonary Bypass for Adult, Patients;
o Extracorporeal Circulatory Support for Renal, Neurological, Hepatic, and Vascular Surgery
o Extracorporeal Resuscitation
o Extracorporeal Circulation for Long–Term Support of Failing Respiratory or Cardiac Function
o Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
o Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal
o Myocardial Protection
o Perfusion–Assisted Direct Coronary Artery Bypass
o 9. Hemofiltration and Hemodialysis
o Anticoagulation and Hemostasis Monitoring, Analysis, And Intervention
o Thermal Regulation
o Blood Gas and Blood Chemistry Monitoring, Analysis, And Intervention
o Physiological Monitoring, Analysis, and Intervention
o Administration of Blood Components, Pharmaceuticals, and Anesthetic Agents and Pharmaceuticals
o Administration of Anesthetic Agents through a Heart Lung Machine
o Ventricular Assist Device and Mechanical Circulatory Support Management
o Intra–Aortic Balloon Counter-pulsation
o Temporary Pacemaker Management
o Periodic Flow Augmentation Therapy
o Auto-transfusion
o Platelet Gel Production, Autologous Hemocyte Tissue Matrix Production
o Non-differentiated Progenitor Cell Harvest Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate
o Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution
o Isolated Limb or Organ Delivery of Chemotherapeutics, Progenitor Cells, Gene Therapy Vectors and Other Items
o Organ Procurement and Preservation
o Thermogenic Lavage
o Electrophysiological Analysis
o Therapeutic Hyperthermia
o Intravascular Membrane Oxygenation


• Bachelor of Science or higher degree in a health-related field. Possess proficiency in instruction, teaching methodology.
• Must have a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
• Must possess experience in adult and extracorporeal techniques, to include ventricular assist devices (VAD), cell salvage and auto transfusion, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and C02 removal (EMCO and ECCOR), intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP), and emergency cardiopulmonary support (CPS). Be familiar with isolated limb and organ perfusion techniques
• Must be a current Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), with at least fifteen (15) years of perfusion experience in a hospital setting.
• Must be a current Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP), with at least fifteen (15) years of perfusion experience in a hospital setting.
• Have Active BLS through American Heart Association or Military

AmSECT Membership Eligibility

An Active Member shall be any perfusionist active in the practice of extracorporeal circulation technology. There are also opportunities to become a Transitional Active Member for those less than a year removed from graduation from an approved accredited training program. Other options include; an Associate Membership, International Membership, Perioperative Blood Management Clinician Membership, and Student Membership.
