||This instructive 3 day course is designed for physicians and ECMO specialists caring for patients with severe acute respiratory and cardiac failure who receive Extracorporeal Life support (ECLS). The course will be conducted as per ELSO guidelines under the guidance of internationally recognized ECLS experts Dr.Heidi Dalton, Tom Preston, CCP in collaboration with local faculty at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Course content will include ECMO indications and contraindications, ECMO patient and circuit physiology, cannulation techniques, anticoagulation and other aspects of ECMO patient care and management. The course will have 12 hours of didactics and 9hours of small group simulation (hands-on and fundamental review), and also instruction on topics such as circuit check, equipment components, alarms, pressure monitoring, circuit entry, de-airing the circuit, connecting CVVH and plasmapheresis circuits and hand cranking the pump. The course will utilize clinical case scenarios, faculty and educator guidance and technological resources to facilitate team training and clinical critical thinking and decision making. The course is appropriate for centers new to ECMO or those wanting to expand their expertise in neonatal, pediatric and adult ECMO care.
