Position: Staff Perfusionist
Location: University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
Description: Operates the heart-lung machine during cardiopulmonary bypass, and functions in supportive roles for other medical specialties in operating mechanical devices to assist in the conservation of blood and blood products during surgery. Provides extended, long-term support of the patients circulation outside of the operating room environment. Knowledgeable concerning the variety of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation functions and is responsible, in consultation with the surgeon for selecting the appropriate equipment and techniques to be used. Monitors the altered circulatory process closely, taking appropriate corrective action when abnormal situations arise by keeping both the surgeon and anesthesiologist fully informed. Initiates and maintains positive relationships with patients/customers. Initiates and maintains positive relationships with co-workers. Takes responsibility for self-development and supports a learning environment. Displays commitment to the mission of the hospital and its values.
Requirements: Skilled, allied health professional, trained and educated specifically as a member of an open-heart surgical team responsible for setup and operation of the heart-lung equipment. Knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology are necessary. Knowledge of ECMO, Abiomed, Thoratec, veno-veno bypass, vacuum assisted venous drainage, circulatory support, autotransfusion, and retrograde cerebral perfusion. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, as well as, exhibiting strong organizational skills and work ethic. Demonstrates a professional demeanor when responding to patients/customers.
