Schedule: 40-hours per week scheduled between the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:30 PM
On-Call assignment (includes Weeknight/Weekend/University Holidays)

Position Summary:
To provide quality clinical perfusion services for adult and pediatric patients during cardiothoracic surgeries, VADs, heart/lung transplants, liver transplants, and mechanical support services. Additionally, the incumbent will provide regional perfusion for cancer chemotherapy, and administer emergency cardiac and other perfusion procedures including ECMO.

Position Responsibilities:
• Operate heart-lung machine during open-heart procedures in the operating room.
• Participate in direct patient care during cardiac surgery by providing total or partial body perfusion, with desired temperature control and maintenance of normal physiological function.
• Set-up and prepare the heart-lung machine for use in surgery.
• Provide daily maintenance of the heart-lung machines and other equipment following surgery.
• Participate in discussions regarding the clinical services provided in the area of assignment.
• Provide clinical instruction and subsequent evaluation of perfusion students in the University of Iowa Perfusion Technology Program.
• Design new, and modify existing procedures and equipment for use in cardiovascular surgery.
• Conduct training and/or orientation of staff.
• Prepare heparin and protamine dosages for the patient under the direction of the surgeon, including running the activated clotting times; run ACTs with POC testing with blood gasses.
• Perform point of care blood gas monitoring.
• Perform regional perfusion techniques for cancer chemotherapy.
• Participate in research laboratory procedures involving extracorporeal circulation techniques.
• Monitor cardiac output measurements during the post-operative period.
• Operate Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump and monitor patient vital signs.
• Participate in research and development of cardiac assist devices.
• Operate autologous transfusion system (cell savers) for cardiac and other procedures that require autotransfusion services.
• Support liver transplants with rapid infusion device and veno-veno bypass if necessary.
• Instruct cardiovascular residents, fellows and other medical staff in the function and theory involved in the techniques and equipment used during cardiopulmonary by-pass to support the patient undergoing open-heart surgery.
• Write and publish pertinent clinical and research data involving cardiovascular and extracorporeal devices and techniques.
• Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
• Maintain responsibility for quality patient care and demonstrate a willingness to support change for the improvement of patient care and laboratory operation.
• Assume responsibility for ongoing self-learning and maintenance of clinical skills.
• Utlize equipment including (but not limited to): roller pumps, centrifugal pumps, Tandem Heart, Centrimag, Rotaflow, Impella, Heartmate, and Heartware.
• Prime LVADs (Heartware/Heartmate).
• Follow general policies and procedures in accordance with regulations of the UI Health Care, the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the UI Heart and Vascular Center.
• Demonstrate acceptance of responsibility; pride in work performed; and flexibility in acceptance of assignments.
• Consistently maintain professional behavior and appearance.
• Ability to meet on-call requirements (nights, weekends and holidays) within 30 minutes.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education Requirement:
• A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline or an equivalent combination of experience and education is required.
• Completion and graduation from CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion required.

Experience Requirement:
• Demonstrated knowledge of, and problem-solving skills associated with job duties/responsibilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills required.
• Ability to respond to on-call requirements within 30 minutes.

Certification/Licensure Requirement:
• Certified or certification-eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Certification must be achieved within 12 months of start date.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required by start date.

Desired Qualifications:
• Experience with transplant and VAD desired.
• Experience with pediatric perfusion desired.
• Previous experience in an academic medical setting desired.
• Some knowledge of University policies and procedures desired.
